Het West-Indisch Huis
Het West-Indisch Huis, an icon of Amsterdam city centre
This stately house from 1617 lies in the heart of Amsterdam on Haarlemmerstraat. The West India House owes its name to the West India Company, which was headquartered here between 1623 and 1647. In one of the four rooms the Lords Nineteen took the decision to build the city of New Amsterdam, which would grow into today’s New York. The statue of Peter Stuyvesant, governor-general of this post, still graces the courtyard of the building to this day
.
With its closed inner court and large fine rooms the House provides a prestigious setting for extremely diverse events.
Business
Of course you can plan your meeting anywhere, but it will only be truly special if you come to Het West-Indisch Huis. In 1625 in one of the four rooms the commanders of the West India Company gave the order to build a fort on the island of Manhattan, and this was the initial impetus for the metropolis of New York. In this stately monumental building you will find everything you need: spacious meeting rooms, superb catering and a delightful inner court. We provide professional support and a culinary arrangement during your meeting, all of it perfectly geared to your business programme.
Stylish & Party
The attractive Het West-Indisch Huis in the heart of Amsterdam, with its closed inner court, has been the home base of ‘a matter of Taste’ since 1991. You can choose from four stylish rooms with each its own character. This makes them suitable for the most diverse meetings, from a large party for a maximum of 700 people to an intimate dinner for a minimum of 30 guests. Het West-Indisch Huis has a beautiful monumental air. With the proper styling & decoration we can create the desired atmosphere ranging from classical to modern.
WEDDING-DAY
For years Het West-Indisch Huis was the place where Amsterdammers officially married. And they can still tie the knot here, from the marriage celebration and reception and dinner, to a dancing party lasting into the small hours.
With its closed inner court and large fine rooms the House provides a prestigious setting. The inner court is truly unique. In spite of the location of Het Huis in the centre of Amsterdam, you will experience its peace and quiet as soon as you pass under the gate entrance on Herenmarkt. The romantic and authentic atmosphere of the house is an ideal location to celebrate your entire wedding-day. Your wedding, your own personal style. Here nothing is standard and everything can be done differently. Het West-Indisch Huis is also a beautiful setting for your wedding reportage. The entire location is always at your exclusive disposal
